I suppose you could not imagine, how pleased I am to announce you this excellent news: I have just set up my professional blog! If you are interested in pursuing my career path, as well as getting acquainted with some of my personal experience and observations concerning foreign languages and translation, I will be more than happy to have you as my Guest.
I presume I should, at least shortly, introduce myself – my name is Joanna Mirek and I am a newly graduate in Applied Linguistics, as well as a budding translator and interpreter between English, German and Polish (the latter of which is my mother tongue).
This blog has been created with all those interested in foreign languages in mind – it is dedicated to students, self-taught persons, teachers, (prospective) translators and interpreters, as well as my future clients.
Broadly speaking, as I have already mentioned, this blog will be entirely devoted to acquiring and teaching foreign languages, as well as tricks of the trade concerning translating and interpreting, mostly based on my personal experience. I am also going to describe various fields of study within university education related to foreign languages, which are available in Poland, as well as to provide you with some of the tips concerning the process of learning in general (such as learning strategies, the question of motivation, procrastination etc.). The blog entries will be – as you can see now – written both in English and Polish. Furthermore, I am determined to inform you about the projects related to my professional development I am involved with.
I suppose I owe you an explanation that I am actually quite an experienced blogger, although in a completely different field. I have been running another website since 2007, when I set up a blog concerning empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi. When I was younger, I used to watch the “Sissi” film-trilogy with the magnificent Romy Schneider, who portrayed the main protagonist. Intrigued by the dramatic life of the Austrian empress, I started looking for information about her, yet back in the early 2000s, there were only few Polish books and webpages describing her biography. To make matter worse, I was not fluent in any foreign language... Therefore, I was – in a way – forced to translate various texts from foreign languages, which was for me no mean feat. Interestingly enough, this was my very first translation that I did! The vast majority of webpages devoted to this historical figure were avaibalble either in German or English, so I picked up these two languages very quickly and was eager to learn more and more, not only at school.
It is worth mentioning that running this blog provided me an extra incentive to become a translator. Since then I have been hugely motivated to improve my language skills and sink my teeth into foreign languages. Now I admit that it was a perfect choice and I am immensly enthusiastic about all my achievements up to now and the new assignments yet to come.
I hope I will be able to present you my passion for foreign languages and fire you with enthusiasm to learn at least one of them. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed! :)
